The Drink Up Jewish Link Sportstar of the Week: Eli Fishbein

The Jewish Link and Drink Up would like to recognize senior at Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School senior Eli Fishbein as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. Fishbein has established himself as one of the Yeshiva League’s most lethal power hitters and is the president of the Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School Sports Management Club. Rabbi Richard, athletic director at RKYHS, told The Jewish Link, “Eli has been a team leader both on and off the field. He’s got a tremendous understanding and passion towards the game. It’s as if we have an additional coach on the field. And as far as sports management is concerned, he has injected lots of exciting speakers and learning opportunities for students across all grades and backgrounds. He makes it interesting and fun at the same time!”

Eli, yasher koach on being recognized as Sportstar of the Week and for receiving such high praise from Rabbi Kirsch. Who is your role model and why?

My role models are my parents since they have shown me how to lead a positive lifestyle and how to care about others without being haughty about it.

What is your favorite sport?

My favorite sport is baseball. I have been a Yankees fan since I was born and I’ve played little league since I was 4. It has always been an amazing and major part of my life throughout the years.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

My greatest sports accomplishment would have to be winning the Home Run Derby at the Ezra Schwartz Memorial Baseball Tournament in Sharon, MA. I was a last minute entry into the competition who was doubted (even by myself) to be able to put up any numbers, let alone win. It was also amazing that I was able to participate in front of my dad who came all the way there just for the tournament.

Who is your favorite professional athlete?.

My favorite athlete is Trevor Bauer. He is one of the most exciting, funny and personable players in the MLB, yet he also has the talent to back it up.

What is your pregame routine?

My pregame routine has always been listening to my specific “hype” playlist and just staying focused. I also always make sure to talk to all of my teammates to try to get them as hyped as me.

What is your earliest sports memory?

My earliest sports memory is from my first Yankees game. I was a little less than 4 years old. I remember it was Andy Pettitte pitching against the Diamondbacks and the Yankees won the game 7-2.

What is your weirdest sports memory?

My weirdest sports memory would have to be when I played at the Junior Maccabi games in Pennsylvania. In the middle of an inning, my teammate who was playing first base was not feeling well. He called time out, walked over to the sideline, threw up, and then came back into the game and played well.

What is your favorite sports memory?

My favorite sports memory is winning the MYHSAL baseball championship. The school let me and two other kids try out for the varsity team in eighth grade. We all made it, yet the other two kids had more of a role on the team then I did. Still, we made it to the championship against the three-time defending champions, Frisch. We were the heavy underdogs yet we played our best game and we beat them 2-1. Even though I was riding the bench, it was amazing being a part of that group of guys and also being able to take down that Frisch team.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

The best thing about being a Sportstar is getting recognized in The Jewish Link for just playing the sport that I love on a team that is awesome to be a part of.
